Ask the Librarian about Banned Books Week

Q. What is Banned Books Week? When is it?

A. Banned Books Week--http://www.ala.org/bbooks--celebrates the freedom to choose or the freedom to express one's opinion even if that opinion might be considered unorthodox or unpopular and stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of those unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints to all who wish to read them.

Find out about the 2007 Banned Books Week Kit. New 2007 Banned Books Week materials, including t-shirts, buttons, posters, bookmarks, pins, and a rather tony tote bag, are available for purchase from the Banned Books Week section of the ALA Online Store. The 2007 Banned Books Resource Guide, which lists book titles that were asked to be removed from schools and libraries, as well as when and the reasons why, is also now available from the ALA Online Store.

Banned Books Week will next be celebrated September 27-October 4, 2008.
