Library Staff

Karen Muller

Karen Muller, ALA Librarian and Knowledge Management Specialist, has worked in several special and academic libraries, combining a service ethic with developing technological solutions to providing information to the library’s clientele.  Ms. Muller applies extensive library knowledge, along with insider knowledge of the American Library Association gained over a 14 years of managing two of ALA’s member divisions, to the administration of the ALA Library.  She has worked with others on the ALA staff to implement the association’s member information management system and the knowledge management system which supports the staff intranet and the library catalog.  In addition she has implemented the FAQ on the ALA website and an AskALA service for expediting questions to the American Library Association.

Valerie Hawkins

In 2007, Valerie Hawkins celebrated her tenth year at the American Library Association. She came to the ALA Library building on the two years she spent as a student worker for Special Collections at the USC Doheny Memorial Library in Los Angeles, Calfiornia, while studying Filmic Writing at the School of Cinema-TV. Librarianship has always followed closely behind Valerie's creativity and pop culture interests, shown in her "cataloging" her homemade videotapes of TV shows and movies as being consecutive volumes of Val's Videotape Odyssey, and her pet summer vacation project during childhood of counting all of the issues of the shared comic book collection of herself and her brother, repairing pages and covers, as needed, along the way (last count was in the 1980s with over 2000 issues!). She maintains professional presences and accounts on LiveJournal, MySpace, del.icio.us, Facebook, Ning, and YouTube, contributes photos to the ALA Staff account on Flickr, and is Second Life's ALALibraryVal Miles of the ALA Staff Group. Every day, she happily answers questions by phone, fax, and e-mail from all over the country (and beyond!) about libraries, librarians, and the American Library Association.
