Thank You for Being a Library Friend

National Friends of Libraries Week 2025

It’s National Friends of Libraries Week! Now in its 20th (!) year, this weeklong celebration organized by United for Libraries recognizes all the incredible things that Friends groups do for their local libraries.

You may be asking yourself, “What exactly are Friends groups?” Great question.

Friends of Libraries are non-profit, charitable volunteer groups that support libraries of all types. Since the beginning of the American library movement, Friends groups have been formed by citizens using their collective powers to do ensure that the American library legacy remains viable. Friends do it all, from bake sales and fundraising efforts to voicing support for the library at town hall and city council meetings and just by spreading the word about the great services and value that the library brings to the community. There’s a Friends group for everyone, from teens, to academics, to media centers.

The nation celebrates

From October 19-25, libraries, local governments, and citizens across the U.S. are promoting the incredible work that their Friends groups do and touting the benefits of membership.

In Florida, Volusia County Council approved a proclamation recognizing the extraordinary contributions of the 11 Friends of the Library groups that support the county’s public library system.

In Nevada, the Friends of Washoe County Library (WCL)—established in 1980—has raised more than $2 million for the library system in support of technology, materials, programs, and more since its establishment. A sizable amount came just last year.

“In 2024, the Friends donated $109,000 to support the library system,” WCL Public Information and Development Officer Jamie Hemingway said. “Their volunteers work hard year-round to promote memberships and hold popular book sales that generate these much-needed funds.”

And in Texas, the Friends of the Library group in Kerrville celebrated its 72nd year of supporting the local library. The group’s dedication to the community and its library led it to receive the Kerrville Kindness Award in 2024.

Are you interested in getting involved in your local Friends group? Or starting one in your own community? We have all the resources you need and more, including a fascinating webinar from 2022 where Friends groups from across the country discuss how they work with the library to raise funds and support.

Thank you Friends groups for all that you do for your libraries!
