We’re gearing up for a very exciting National Library Week, April 7–13. It’ll be seven days of celebration, advocacy, and events across the country showcasing the everyday power and impact of libraries, librarians, and library workers. And we’re very excited about this event, in particular.
On April 8, also known as Right to Read Day, the New Republic is presenting a discussion on banned and challenged books with authors Lauren Groff, Nikole Hannah-Jones, Ellen Hopkins, George M. Johnson, David Levithan, Ashley Hope Perez, Jodi Picoult, and Jacqueline Woodson, hosted by MSNBC's Katie Phang. The magazine will award the inaugural Toni Morrison Courage Award to five individuals fighting against book bans, and the American Library Association’s (ALA) Top 10 Most Challenged Books of 2023—to be released by ALA earlier that day—will be spotlighted, as well.
The event will be held at the Hub in Pinecrest, Florida, in partnership with ALA, the American Federation of Teachers, Alfred A. Knopf, the Books & Books Literary Foundation, Macmillan Publishers, and PEN America.
