In episode 38 of the “How I Library” podcast, show host and I Love Libraries editor Phil Morehart speaks with writer Courtney M. Block about her new book, “Inside the World’s Haunted Libraries.”
Libraries across the world have reported paranormal incidents, ranging from books flying off shelves and otherworldly voices emanating from the dark to sightings of apparitions and other unexplained entities. Block, an author, paranormal researcher, and reference, instruction, and user engagement librarian at Indiana University Southeast, has captured hundreds of these stories in her new book, “Inside the World’s Haunted Libraries,” a work full of expansive research and scholarship and good, old-fashioned, spine-tingling storytelling.
In her book, Block details library hauntings from all corners of the globe, from the National Library of Indonesia and the Royal Perth Hospital Library in Australia to libraries across Europe and in almost all 50 U.S. states, including a haunting not far from the American Library Association’s Chicago home that was the subject of this fascinating podcast and video from American Libraries magazine.
Block joins the show to discuss that haunting and many more featured in “Inside the World’s Haunted Libraries,” why libraries are prime places for paranormal happenings, her research process, and more.

How you can support libraries
With library funding being gutted and censorship on the rise, supporting libraries is more critical than ever. If you’re looking for a way to help, we urge you to become a Supporter of the American Library Association by donating.
At the American Library Association, we are here to protect libraries — today and for generations to come. What does your donation do? It helps a neighbor gain skills to start a business. It helps a child discover themselves through books and programs. And it helps keep libraries strong, open, and free for everyone.
