The Secret Life of Librarians

Yesterday, the Carnegie Corporation of New York unveiled The Secret Life of Librarians, a new online series that explores the unexpected stories of librarians across the country and their contributions as civic heroes who are improving lives and bringing communities together. And the 10 recipients of the 2024 I Love My Librarian Award are at the series' heart.

The librarians honored by the American Library Association (ALA), the New York Public Library, and the Corporation with the I Love My Librarian Award were chosen from a pool of more than 1,400 nominations by community members, library patrons, colleagues, and more. Each recipient was awarded a plaque and a $5,000 prize in recognition of their public service last January at ALA's LibLearnX in Baltimore.

The Secret Life of Librarians shines a spotlight on these exceptional librarians, with each penning a short piece encapsulating their work, and more importantly, why they do it. (Along with some truly lovely photography taken at the 2024 I Love My Librarian Award ceremony at LibLearnX.

One librarian in Indiana helps patrons discover their true histories. A Florida librarian creates a haven for students after a school shooting. A Puerto Rico patent and trademark librarian makes dreams come true for the island’s entrepreneurs.

These are the stories of the unsung heroes whose work impacts lives both inside the library and outside its walls. Please join us in celebrating these outstanding librarians! View the series here.
