James Patterson Donates $50,000 to Librarians

In celebration of the release of his latest nonfiction book, "The Secret Lives of Booksellers & Librarians," author James Patterson is honoring select American Bookseller Association and American Library Association (ALA) members with bonuses.  

The Secret Lives of Booksellers and LibrariansPatterson is the creator of numerous beloved characters and series, including Alex Cross, the Women’s Murder Club, Jane Smith, and Maximum Ride, and the chronicler of true stories about the Kennedys, John Lennon, and Tiger Woods, as well as military heroes, police officers, and ER nurses. He has coauthored #1 bestselling novels with Bill Clinton and Dolly Parton, and collaborated most recently with Michael Crichton on Eruption. He has received an Edgar Award, 10 Emmy Awards, the Literarian Award from the National Book Foundation, and the National Humanities Medal.

The author plans to give $200 each to 250 librarians and library workers across the country who are ALA members for a total donation of up to $50,000. Patterson has given more than $100 million dollars to education and literacy programs over the years.

“We are so grateful to James Patterson for offering bonuses to 250 ALA members in celebration of the truly amazing work librarians and library workers do to serve their communities,” ALA President Emily Drabinski said in a statement. “I encourage our members to nominate themselves or others to take advantage of this opportunity. Congratulations to Mr. Patterson on the release of his new book, 'The Secret Lives of Booksellers and Librarians,' and thank you again!" 

The bonuses are only available to ALA members, but anyone can nominate a member. The deadline for nominations is April 30, 2024. Winners will be announced at the ALA Annual Conference in San Diego this summer.
