Join the American Library Association (ALA) and NBC’s Banned Book Club for a discussion of Rupi Kaur’s “milk and honey” Thursday, April 25.
“milk and honey” is a collection of poetry about love, trauma, and healing. Each chapter deals with a “different kind of pain,” according to Kaur. In 2022, it was one of many books that conservative parents wanted banned from public schools in the state of Texas. Kaur called the ban "disturbing.” The book was also banned in multiple school districts in Missouri in 2023.
“I remember sitting in my school library in high school, turning to books about sexual assault because I didn’t have anyone else to turn to,” Kaur wrote of the banning of “milk and honey.” “This is the reality for many students…. We all find comfort in literature that reflects our experiences. Now that books about sexual assault and other topics are being banned— I worry for students who rely on school libraries for access to literature.”
