I Love Libraries Launches New Podcast, “How I Library”

I Love Libraries and the American Library Association (ALA) are proud to release the new podcast, “How I Library.” This monthly series, hosted by ALA Communications Manager Phil Morehart, will feature authors, filmmakers, musicians, scholars, thought leaders, and, of course, librarians discussing the importance of libraries, their favorite library memories, and issues facing the library world. Along the way, they’ll share thoughts about their work, what inspires them, and so much more.

The podcast is an extension of the #HowILibrary campaign that ALA launched last fall that asked authors “how they library”: what the library means to them, how they use and have used the library, and how the library has impacted their lives.

“We are thrilled to launch this podcast that highlights the ways libraries have inspired everyone from authors and scholars to filmmakers, musicians, and librarians themselves,” said ALA President Emily Drabinski. “The podcast will remind us of our own library stories, the way they help us understand the world around us, the way they spark curiosity in learners of all ages, and the magic they create in our communities.”

In the first episode, Morehart speaks with Meg Medina, author of “Merci Suárez Changes Gears,” “Evelyn Del Rey Is Moving Away,” “Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass,” and many more acclaimed books. She’s also the 2023-2024 National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature. They discuss the recent graphic novelization of her classic book, “Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass,” Medina’s thoughts on being the author of a banned book and the impact of book bans, and more. Medina will serve as the honorary chair of National Library Week, April 7-13, 2024, which celebrates the indispensable role of libraries and library workers in schools and communities.

“I’m excited to launch this new podcast at a critical moment in history when libraries are under attack and needed now more than ever,” Morehart said. “We have an exciting season ahead full of conversations that celebrate libraries and their lasting influence. Stay tuned.”
