Are you a high-school student or parent/guardian of a teen who wants to get hands-on journalism experience this school year? PBS News Student Reporting Labs (SRL) is for you then.
SRL is a hands-on student journalism training program from PBS News. You may remember them from Episode 18 of the “How I Library” podcast, where we spoke with two students who participated in “On Our Minds,” SRL’s award-winning podcast series about the teenage experience.
This year, SRL offers reporting opportunities across formats, topics, and skill levels in podcast production, social media video, and longer-form video packages, along with in-person training and support opportunities from the SRL team.
Starting this week, SRL kicks off an exciting three-part Back to School virtual event series for students, teachers, and parents interested in learning about and becoming involved with SRL for the 2025-2026 school year. And the first installment starts tomorrow!
Part 1: Back to School Kickoff, Tuesday, August 26, 7:00pm ET
Learn how to get started with SRL and StoryMaker, SRL’s resource platform, and connect with SRL staff. You’ll leave with a clear understanding of how to use SRL resources confidently, what’s new this year, and where to go for help with the reporting process.
Part 2: Find Your Story, Tuesday, September 9, 7:00pm ET
Learn how journalists decide which stories to pursue. This workshop will provide tips and support for teachers to help their students develop strong story ideas and set the tone for student-centered reporting. They’ll share ready-to-use tools for teachers to help students identify compelling story ideas, understand news values, make thoughtful editorial decisions in the classroom, and more.
Part 3: Efficiency Hacks: Workflow Strategies for Educators, Tuesday, September 30th, 7:00pm ET
Discover real-world tips from experienced SRL teachers to streamline student media projects, including best practices, ready-to-use tools, and solutions for common classroom challenges.
