Library Workers Are Shining Stars

National Library Workers Day

It’s National Library Workers Day!

Celebrated each year on the Tuesday of National Library Week, National Library Workers Day is an opportunity to recognize the hard-working, dedicated, and often-underpaid library professionals who keep our libraries thriving, especially during these challenging times. Please take a moment to appreciate the library worker in your life today!

Want to see the name and accomplishments of your favorite library worker emblazoned in the stars? You can honor them by submitting a star for them on the ALA-APA Galaxy of Stars, which features praises and other good words that people throughout the U.S. have written about their favorite library workers. ALA-APA receives more than 1,000 Stars submissions each year, representing public, school, academic, government, and special libraries.

Here's a sample of the accolades that can be found in the Galaxy.

Magenta wrote: "Jennifer from a school library in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is a Star because she has a beautiful library space that she carefully curates and stocks with books of all kinds. She has fostered a strong culture of reading, library enthusiasm, and fun! She sets the bar high for everyone in her building and is helpful everywhere she can be."

Justine wrote: "Lacey from a public library in Juneau, Alaska, is a Star because she always is kind and cheerful during children’s story time. She has a wondrous smile and laugh and children watch her every move mesmerized. She does a craft and book story hour in the summer and welcomes all ages and is never flustered!"

Lillian wrote: "Lance from a public library in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, is a Star because he’s been there from the day I got my library card when I moved to town! Always know my name and what books I wanted! Always efficient and friendly <3."

Kristin wrote: "Nicole from an academic library in Riverdale, Georgia, is a Star because she is always going above and beyond to make sure our students love reading and attending the media center. Her love for books and literacy filters throughout our school. She wears many hats but never loses sight of her purpose in our building."

Julie wrote: "Mindy from a government library in Twentynine Palms, California, is a Star because she’s the fastest cataloger west of the Mississippi! Mindy keeps our libraries stocked with excellent books, movies and so much more! She hosts a fantastic Manifesting Magic program in our libraries. She’s a valuable team member and we adore her! Thanks for all you do, Ms. Mindy!"

Lauren wrote: "Camille from a special library in Rockville, Maryland, is a Star because Camille embodies the epitome of a customer service-oriented library professional. With unwavering patience and grace, she adeptly navigates through every challenge that comes her way, no matter how bothersome. Her commitment to excellence extends beyond her individual responsibilities; she consistently demonstrates exceptional teamwork and a willingness to assist others. Camille’s proactive approach fills numerous gaps within our library operations, and her willingness to go above and beyond is nothing short of remarkable. Working alongside Camille has been an absolute pleasure, and it’s evident that her contributions significantly enhance our services. She consistently rises to the occasion, confronting challenges head-on with resilience and determination. Without a doubt, Camille stands out as one of the finest library professionals I’ve had the privilege to collaborate with. Our library owes a great deal to her dedication and ability to tackle any obstacle with confidence."
