Phoenix Biomedical Campus: Arizona Health Science Library
Phoenix, Arizona
“Naomi continues to make the campus and local community a better place, works for social justice, and raises up leaders among the next generation of librarians.”
At the University of Arizona’s Phoenix Biomedical Campus, Naomi Bishop is a trusted resource, a gifted collaborator, and a tireless advocate for equity and inclusion.
Naomi is a leader in her campus community, bringing much-needed awareness to issues of racism in medicine. Nominators say her social justice efforts have changed the university’s curriculum for the better: after she spoke out about implicit racism in health sciences literature, the College of Medicine revised their approach to teaching about genetics, ancestry, and race.
During the pandemic, the local medical community turned to Naomi for up-to-date research about public health and safety best practices; the information she provided helped shape Maricopa County’s COVID policies. She has also worked to provide online instruction, digital course resources, and virtual community-building events to the campus community.
“Naomi works to ensure that the library, university, and healthcare fields are equitable places for all,” her nominators wrote. “She continues to make the campus and local community a better place, works for social justice, and raises up leaders among the next generation of librarians.”
